Top Ten Tuesday - Books Everyone Else Has Read

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at The Broke and The Bookish

This Week's Prompt:

Top Ten Books It Feels Like Everyone Has Read But Me

Let's See...

1: The Hunger Games is in the category of "Books I'll pick up one of these days if I see an available copy at the library and I don't have anything else I want to get and I'm all caught up with my other reading." I just don't feel the need to go out of my way.

2: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo I heard a little about this book and shrugged, then I heard a little more and got interested, and then a little more, and it went back into the "maybe, eventually" category.

3: The sequels to Twilight I read the first one so that I could criticize it fairly, but I am not subjecting my brain to the rest.

4: A Feast For Crows/A Dance With Dragons Nope. Not enough hours in the day to read another of these doorstoppers. Not going back to this series unless I hear that it ended and the ending was really amazing, and even then I might just read a synopsis or something.

In  a more Classic vein, 5: Catcher in the Rye Missed this one in school, and never had the umph to track it down.

My brain refuses to come up with any more just now, partially because I think "everyone" is a vague category. There are plenty of YA books that I've seen on lots of blogs but I don't have any interest in, but I don't know anyone personally who has read them. Similarly, many of my friends have such different reading habits that there are very few books "everyone" has read.

Comments

  1. Catcher might be one of those books that if you miss it when you're an angsty teen it won't have the same oomph later. Still a good read but you'll probably be annoyed at Holden because, well, he's an angsty teen.

  2. I couldn't come up with a list this week, but I also got stuck after book 1 in the Twilight series... No plans to continue...

  3. I would actually encourage you to pick up Hunger Games sooner rather than later. I was skeptical but ended up really enjoying them.

  4. Why do I feel like I commented on this already? Because your comments make me feel like you're me (horrible comment though that might be).

I read Twilight because it was an eBook and I'd ranted about it for years. Now I have a lovely supply of quotes to pull out if someone tries to defend it ("I would have been angrier if his laughter wasn't so fascinating."). But I tried reading New Moon, and it was even worse, so I had to stop.

AND someone else who hasn't gotten pulled into the George R.R. Martin madness. Lovely.

  5. Oh! And I read Catcher in the Rye this year for the first time, and was fully expecting to find Holden annoying because everyone said I would, but I didn't. He complains all the time because he's a teenager and doesn't know how else to deal with everything wrong that he sees in the world.

  6. @Alice: I did read the first few GRRM books, back when it was "hey, this is a neat fantasy series", not a burgeoning media empire. But I found them really depressing, not to mention never-ending. I have only so much patience with grim-and-gritty, everyone-dies-horribly type stories. If I'm going to spend days reading something, I had better end the experience inspired, pleased or at least satisfied.
