Blog Hop and Friday Follow Feb 4

Book Blogger Hop
The Book Blogger Hop is hosted at crazy-for-books.com

This week's question for discussion:

"What are you reading now and why are you reading it?"

I'm currently reading The Fall by Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, because I loved the first book, The Strain (review here).

I'm also working through a bunch of Middle Grade re-reading for a week long project starting Feb 14: Fantasy Flashback Week. More about that plan in this post.

And Follow Friday is hosted at Parajunkee's View!

The question for discussion there is:

What is the book you are currently 'pushing'? (Pushing meaning trying to get people to read it)

Well, I'll always push Lois McMaster Bujold on anyone who'll listen, and I'm not above encouraging folks who I think will enjoy it to read my husband's book...

But the biggest thing I'm pushing on people right now is comic books. Don't dismiss them! Much awesome sequential art goes unknown by people who would love it, if they only knew where to start. You should be reading Scott Snyder's dark and provocative American Vampire, Bryan Q. Miller's super-fun current run on Batgirl, and also go back and check out everything Gail Simone has written. You can start with Birds of Prey (graphic novels reviewed here.)

  2. Thanks for stopping by and following. I'm your newest follower! I've never been much of a comic book reader, but last year I read Persepolis and enjoyed it greatly. I'll have to try another one soon!

  3. I just read my first graphic novel this week. It's a young reader novel, Zita the Spacegirl. We all loved it at my house. It just may be the start of a new obsession. I'm a new follower. Happy Friday!

The book I'm pushing is Fatty Legs, a terrific story of a girl's unbroken spirit in the face of hostility and alienation.

You can read my review of it here:

  8. Hi everyone! Welcome!

Off to check out some of your blogs in a minute, but first some responses...

@TwoBibliomaniacs: Persepolis was a recent read for me too, I really liked it. Another literary/memoir type graphic novel is the classic Maus, which is amazing.

@Aimee: I almost picked up Zita the Space Girl this week! Maybe I'll have to go back to the store. Your kids (and you) might also like the all ages fantasy epic graphic novel series Bone by Jeff Smith (I have a review in queue, but not up yet). Owly is another super cute kids/all ages comic, one without words.

  9. @Siobian: I have been really liking The Fall so far. Both books are slightly gory horror, though, fair warning.

Oh and in general, here's MORE graphic novel recommendations!

Neil Gaiman's Sandman: now a classic, still a great intro to comics for those who like adult fantasy literature

Batman: The Long Halloween is more advanced super-heroics, but if you were wondering where they got a lot of the aspects of the plot of the last movie...

Runaways is fun, Y:The Last Man starts strong and kind of flounders by the end, and I've liked the first few Fables volumes (drama/action starring fairy tale refugees)

Also lots of books are being adapted these days, with mixed success. Anita Blake and Dark Tower both have comic adaptations running now, The Last Unicorn was a 6 issue series last year that I loved, and I know there are other recent ones.
